As September closes, the heavy Tokyo summer should give way to crisp evening air. The colour and noise of the season fade, leaving the trunk and bare branches. For Delphites, this is the essential quarter, when mistakes can still become successes and a good year can become a great one. Around Shūbun (秋分), the autumn equinox, light and darkness stand in perfect balance. The main harvest has not yet come in. It is a time of fluidity and potential.

At the Heian court, nobles dressed for the season in kasane no irome, layered silk whose colours echoed the plants of the moment. For autumn, only one flower would do: the chrysanthemum, later the emblem of the emperor and a symbol of Japan.
As the Chrysanthemum Festival approached, courtiers wrote seasonal poetry, drank kikuzake (sake steeped with chrysanthemum petals to ward off misfortune), and pressed silk cloths damp with autumn dew to their skin for long life. Join us in that spirit.
