“Robert advises the Board on systemic risk. He helps our members look beyond the quarterly news cycle to understand the long-term economic architecture of the region.”
Robert A. Madsen
Senior Fellow, Center for International Studies, MIT
Executive Council, Unison Capital
Former Management Consultant, McKinsey & Company
Robert Madsen operates at the highest level of macroeconomic strategy, where finance, politics, and national security intersect. A Senior Fellow at MIT’s Center for International Studies, he has spent decades advising financial institutions, multinational corporations, and government agencies on the systemic risks and opportunities within the global economy.
His deep engagement with Japan is both practical and theoretical. For over a decade, he served on the Executive Council of Unison Capital, one of Japan’s premier private equity firms, helping to steer investment strategy in a complex market. Prior to that, he spent sixteen years writing the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) monthly Japan Country Reports, providing the definitive English-language analysis of the Japanese economy to investors worldwide.
A Rhodes Scholar with degrees from Harvard, Oxford, and Stanford Law School, Robert’s career has included roles as Asia Strategist for Soros Private Funds Management and as a consultant to 'supermajor' energy companies. He provides the Board with a forensic understanding of how global macroeconomic trends—from fiscal policy to energy security—will reshape the Japanese business environment.
